How the sport works

Could you pass the entry test?

We estimate that a sub-60:00 Tacathlon finish corresponds to a pass on the physical entry tests of most standard military, fire service and police forces.

Want to know if you have what it takes? This isn't a bad event to test it.

What is Tacathlon?

Tacathlon is a loaded indoor race held in aircraft hangars. Competitors cover roughly six kilometres under a 10 kg vest, broken by seven work stations, with a memory task carried through the race. Every division races the same looped course against the same published standard.

Divisions

Same course · published standards per division
OpenThe standard race. Loads are scaled by division; one clock for everyone.
DoublesPairs racing under a flag — a charity, a service unit, a gym or a company. Station work is split; both athletes complete every yomp. Doubles score on the season table, not championship seats.
UniformedServing military, police, fire and ambulance, ranked as a service on their own table.
Masters 40+The same course and the same load, with a separate table.
AdaptivePublished adaptive standards per station, including the seated Haul.

Qualification

Season → championship

Men and women race in the same waves on the same course, and qualify on separate tables. At the end of a season, the top six men and top six women qualify for the terrain championship — provided their time is inside the published standard. Seats not filled inside the standard stay empty, and there are no wildcard entries. Standards are reviewed annually and published before each season.

The championships

One terrain per year · qualified athletes only

Each year one terrain championship is held, open only to that season's qualified athletes. TAC Desert is raced as last-one-standing: loaded loops are repeated, with the grid reference resetting each lap, until one athlete remains. Six men and six women enter; there is one champion.

Rules & penalties

R 01The vest stays on from the start line to the finish. Removing it is a withdrawal.
R 02Incomplete or missed reps are repeated before leaving the station.
R 03Grid-reference recall is checked at station 3. A failed recall is a two-minute standing penalty; the clock does not stop.
R 04The course cap is 90:00. Athletes over the cap are withdrawn and recorded DNF.
R 05In Doubles, station work may be split in any ratio; both athletes complete every yomp together.
R 06Times count for qualification only at official events on the standard course.

FAQ

What is Tacathlon?
A loaded hangar race: roughly 6 km of running under a 10 kg vest, broken by seven stations. Waves of 40 start every 15 minutes. Elite target is sub-45; the course cap is 90 minutes.
Do I need a military background?
No. The race is open to everyone. Serving military, police, fire and ambulance can also race in the Uniformed division with its own table.
What is the cognitive gate?
At the start line you are issued an eight-digit grid reference. Mid-race, at the push-up station, you are asked for it. Fail the recall and you stand for two minutes while the clock runs.
How do I qualify for a championship?
Finish a season in the top six men or top six women, inside the published time standard. Seats that don't meet the standard stay empty. There are no wildcards — for anyone.
Can we enter as a pair?
Yes — Doubles race the same course under a flag: a charity, a service unit, a gym or a company. Doubles race for the season table, not championship seats.
How do I enter?
Entry is by application ballot, in the TAC EX app. The Hangar One ballot opens in September. If the ballot is oversubscribed, places are drawn.
What kit do I need?
The 10 kg vest is standardised and issued at the race. Everything else is normal running kit. All station equipment is provided.
Can I watch without racing?
Yes. Hangars carry a spectator area, and the finisher station faces it. Spectator tickets are listed with each event.
